Write an essay in which you discuss the following: ▪ In an introductory paragraph, set the stage for your paper by describing the historical context. What was happening in Europe during the 1930s, and what was America’s position during the same period? ▪ Prior to the outbreak of WWII, how did Americans perceive the rise and rule of Nazism? What sort of information did the American public receive about realities in Nazi Germany, and were they aware of and troubled by the difficulties faced by German Jews? Include specific examples – direct quotes and/or details are recommended. ▪ By the end of the 1930s, how did America’s feelings and policies change? As the situation worsened, was a meaningful effort made to either intervene on behalf of the Jews or welcome them to America? Did our policies change once we learned about the Holocaust itself? Explain why or why not; be very specific, using detailed examples and/or quotes when answering. ▪ Make an argument wherein you either support or condemn American actions during this period. Do you think the United States should prioritize national interests or foreign concerns? What’s more, in your opinion, does the U.S. have a responsibility or duty to confront international human rights violations such as genocide? Why or why not? Finally, would your answer change if you knew American lives would most certainly be put at risk? Explain your reasoning, and dare to be very opinionated!
