The essay is a 5 page report about talking about a specific commodity that was involved in global trade from 1500-1700 CE. I choose to talk about coffee and is travel from the Mediterranean to Europe and its effect of social structures. specificity I want to talk about the beginning of the Renaissance and the establishment of coffeehouses in Europe along with Europe fascination with exotic places. During the time period of 1500-1700 it can be argued that consumerism began and the global trade market at the time fueled the desire for people to purchase “stuff” for pleasure then to not spend money. the report only requires one reference and I have one that has all the needed information. What was the effect the trade of coffee had on working culture across the globe. Coffee was seen as a cure all as well as a popular stimulant as it became more popular from the 1500-1600 and became a more established in Europe in the 1700s. I wanted to talk about the effect of working class citizens that eventually had access to the product (which is unusual for most luxury goods) and the effect it had on slavery since caffeinated works can work more with less sleep. last body paragraph would address what were the preconditions and social choices through 1500-1700 time period that made coffee such a prevalent global commodity? this would talk about the dawn of consumerism in Europe and give more background in its beginnings from the Mediterranean and the popularity of coffeehouses there. Then talk about the many European explorers that experienced these coffeehouses and the drink and wrote home about it. The transition during the time period before 1500 there were many famines in Europe and talking about the preconditions of Europe moving toward consumerism from wanting things not available in their geographic region (like coffee) would tie in well.
