European History Classic Literature
Write a six-page paper responding to one of the assigned readings by Dostoevsky, Shaw, Woolf, or Dyson. You might approach your paper in one of the two following ways: You may discuss all or part of one of the readings as an argument in favor of a position on a particular topic, and respond to it by disagreeing, agreeing with a difference, or agreeing and disagreeing simultaneously. If you are writing about one of the texts with multiple characters, you should probably focus on the ideas presented by a single character and respond to that character as you would to the author of a text. As you develop your ideas, you should review the strategies for responding to an argument presented in chapter 4-7 of They Say / I Say (pp. 53-99), including the suggestions for supporting your argument and responding to reasonable objections. Feel free to use the templates they provide. You may discuss the reading as a work of literature. If you do this, your paper should present a specific thesis about the work you discuss, and support it using evidence drawn from the text. As you develop your ideas, you should review the strategies for writing about works of literature presented in chapter 15 (pp. 187-204) of They Say/I Say. Feel free to use or adapt the templates there as you present your arguments for your thesis. Please cite any other source if it is not strictly within the passage provided. The argument should be derived solely from the passage chosen and should not allude to any other passages or excerpts
