Group Processes

The textbook to cite is Working in Groups: Communication Principles and Strategies, 7e. By Engberg and Wynn, please list this under references.  The group I was a part of was team 1c at American Honda as a topic for the essay. The task was to locate vehicles on the list for airbag recalls. We worked together toward this common goal. Early on in the group’s forming, we discussed strategies to find cars and how to alert each other when we would find one. An energy the affected the group positively was the want to find vehicles.  No less than 800 words. Include the word count at the end of your response, like this: Words: 1582 Submit to the relevant drop box as a Word Document (doc or docx) or a PDF file. Write the response in Standard American English.  This includes using full sentences, indented paragraphs, and proper spelling and punctuation.

Be sure to double space your submission. Place course concepts you use in bold. Example: “Early on our group developed an unusual norm about taking turns in conversation…”  (Note that your goal is still to demonstrate a rich understanding of the course material, though, and not merely to “spam vocabulary.”) If the only source you use is the textbook, you do not need to submit a works cited list.  Prompt For this first writing assignment, you’ll need to explain your answers in light of a group to which you’ve belonged.  Once you’ve read through the rest of the prompt, select a group that helps you illustrate your responses.  (You might review Table 1.2 in the reading to see the range of groups you could consider.) Part 1:  Explain two specific things that happened early on in the group’s history; use these to illustrate two early stages of Tuckman’s Model of Group Development. (Select from the forming, storming, or norming stages.)  In addition to correctly labeling the stage, your answer should clearly reference specific course concepts from the textbook and lesson.

Part 2: Identify a specific group process (such as a behavior or procedure) and explain how it affected synergy in the group, either positively or negatively.  Draw upon the lesson explanations about systems, social facilitation, social interference, or process losses to develop your analysis. Part 3: Explain one norm that has changed over time.  Be sure to explain which type of norm it is, as outlined in the textbook, and what led the norm to change. Evaluation Overall, you are being evaluated on your ability to clearly demonstrate your understanding of the course material and to apply it to a specific group context.  Specific criteria are as follows: Accurate use of course concepts, including selecting the most appropriate term for the behaviors you describe: 10 points Explanation depth, demonstrating an awareness of the complexity of group interaction: 15 points

Writing quality is consistent with Standard American English, and attends to clarity, mechanics, and proofreading: 5 points Here is a link to Tuckerman’s stages of norms on wikipedia-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuckman%27s_stages_of_group_development Explanation of norms=Norms are expectations concerning the kinds of behaviors and opinions that are acceptable or unacceptable in a particular group.
