For this assignment, you will take an Implicit Association Test (don’t worry, it’s not graded!) and then you will spend 30 minutes reflecting on your experience in writing (approximately 1.5 pages double-spaced).Taking an Implicit Association TestAccording to the scientists at Project Implicit[1], a non-profit organization housed at Harvard University, an Implicit Association Test (IAT) measures attitudes and beliefs that people may be unable or unwilling to report. Specifically, the IAT measures strengths of associations between concepts (eg., black people, gay people) and evaluations (eg., good, bad) or stereotypes (eg., athletic, clumsy) by asking the participant to quickly sort words that are on the left and right side of the computer screen.There are several ways to take an Implicit Association Test online. The preferred option for this assignment is to take it through Project Implicit at Harvard University: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/ (Links to an external site.)There are many Implicit Association Tests on their website. Given its relevance to our course material, you should take the Race IAT. The IAT takes 10-12 minutes to complete and should be done in a setting where you can be uninterrupted.Reflecting on Your ExperienceAfter you take the IAT, please spend 30 minutes reflecting on the experience. In your reflection, you do not have to share the results of your test if you do not want to. (You should know that many participants who take the Race IAT test, regardless of their race, show a preference for White people.)
