The Practice of Surveying
Students will research the subject of ethics, particularly as ethics apply to the practice of surveying. A report presenting the results will be prepared by the student, which should be organized and neat, and include references. The objective is not to produce a paper on philosophy, but to examine the importance of ethics in the profession of surveying. The report may deviate from the standard experimental format defined in the Troy University Surveying and Geomatics Sciences Program Report Guidelines; however, the general guidelines should be addressed in the report. That is, the paper should have a title page and references. It should be single-spaced, with margins of approximately 1 inch. The recommended font is 11 point Times New Roman. Particular details will not be specified, but the report should be of high professional quality. The student may use any customary style (Chicago, MLS, APA, etc.), the style must be consistent. The Chicago style is recommended. No particular length is required for the paper, but the effort should reflect the 20% of the grade the report represents. It is unlikely that the subject of ethics can be adequately addressed by a report one or two pages in length. It is recommended that two or three example references should be the minimum. While the report is to primarily focus on ethics in surveying, it may include a more general discussion of the subject. For example, how would a lack of ethics affect the practice of surveying? How do/does ethics elevate or enhance the profession?Obviously, the report must reference the Board of Licensure Administrative Code, but it should not be a blatant ‘cut and paste’ copy of the board’s website text. Proper citation should be made for passages referenced, and the sources identified.
